Captr is built to keep your screenshots on your Mac. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and Captr never uploads your screenshots or anything it learns about them.

Your screenshots and folders

Captr works with the folders you choose: the one macOS saves screenshots to (the Desktop unless you changed it) and the folders you file them into. It moves, renames and, when you ask, deletes screenshots in those folders. It remembers your choice of folders so it can keep working after a restart, and has no access to the rest of your files.

To label each screenshot, Captr stores the name of the app and window it came from on the file itself (as a Finder tag and file attributes). Pins are stored the same way.

Text recognition and duplicates

To let you search the words inside your screenshots, Captr reads their text with Apple's on-device text recognition. To find duplicates, it computes a small visual fingerprint of each image, also on device. Both are kept in a local index inside Captr's own storage on your Mac, and are removed when the screenshot is gone.

Screen Recording and the clipboard

Screen Recording (optional)

If you allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, Captr reads the title of the window a screenshot was taken from, such as the browser tab, to label it. It never records your screen. Without this permission Captr still works and labels screenshots by app only.

Clipboard

When you take a screenshot to the clipboard (with Control added to the screenshot shortcut), Captr saves a copy so it appears in your library. It only does this right after you take a screenshot; images and text you copy from other apps are ignored.

Spotlight, widget, Share menu and Shortcuts

Spotlight is off unless you turn it on in Settings. When it's on, Captr adds your screenshots, their titles and their text to the Spotlight index on your Mac, so ⌘Space can find them. Turning it off removes them.

The widget shows small thumbnails of your newest screenshots. Captr shares those thumbnails with the widget through a folder only Captr and its extensions can read. The Share menu extension passes the images you share to Captr the same way.

Shortcuts actions run on your Mac and return screenshots or their text only to the shortcut you run.

Update checks

Captr asks the App Store whether a newer version is available, using only the app's identifier. No personal information is included. This is the only network request the app makes.
